The Chiricahua National Monument is located in Cochise County which is in Southeastern Arizona.
The Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding areas were once the homeland of the Chiricahua
Apaches, led by Cochise and Geronimo. They took advantage of this rugged land which consist
of high desert basins and abrupt mountain ranges to resist the pioneer settlement for over 25 years.
The Apaches eventually lost their homeland to the expanding entrepreneurs.
On September 8th 1886 B Troop, 4th Calvary, commanded by Captain Henry Lawton, was the force
that brought the balance of Geromino and Cochise's Apache tribe into Fort Bowie. That same day the entire Apache tribe was escorted by Lawton's command to Bowie Station, entrained, and eventually sent to exile in Florida.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge designated the area a National Monument.
Today this Monument is enjoyed by hikers, bikers and nature lovers alike.
